Tom grew up in Winton Place, Cincinnati, Ohio to his parents the late Robert Leo and Dorothy Mae (nee Grasham) Koerner, where his family had a strong connection to their home parish of St. Bernard's. After completing grade school there, he graduated from Roger Bacon High School in 1964. Tom was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam conflict era, and upon discharge, he completed his Associate Degree from The University of Cincinnati under the GI bill. At that time, he was hired by the University where he spent the next 43 years of his working career. Tom later went on to earn his Bachelor's degree, and retired as a Systems Integrator in 2013.

In 1970, he married his long time love, Martha (Marty) Morrison. They would have celebrated their 54th anniversary on October 10 of this year.  Tom and Marty proudly raised their two sons John Koerner and Jim (Leah) Koerner, and their daughter Jenny Koerner - Robertson, each of whom are also graduates of The University. He was the devoted and loving grandfather of their 6 beautiful grandchildren, Alli Robertson, Jack Robertson, Ben Robertson, Ruby Mae Robertson, Charlie Koerner, and Ruthie Ann Koerner. He was a dear brother of Lynn Bauer,  Barb (late Bernie) Cox, Mary  Lee (Bill) Kaiser, Rob Koerner and Kathy (Steve) Farfsing.

First and foremost, Tom was a devoted family man, a gentle, generous and welcoming spirit. When asked shortly after retirement what he saw as a goal moving forward, Tom replied "I want to watch my grandkids grow up. "He loved spending time with his immediate and extended families, his friends and collecting baseball cards, among other things. He will be dearly missed by many.

Tom passed away peacefully on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 78. Visitation at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (Dry Ridge), 5361 Dry Ridge Rd., on Monday (October 14) from 10:00 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Tom had affiliation with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and believed in it's mission.
