Obituary

Roger Albert Mayer, age 93, died peacefully on October 2, 2026. Roger lived a life defined by warmth, gratitude, connection, and a genuine love for people.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, where he spent the first eight decades of his life, Roger moved with JoAnn, his one true love, to Cincinnati in 2016 to be closer to their daughters.

Roger and JoAnn made The Wellington at North Bend Crossing their new home, where they quickly became part of a vibrant and supportive community. Together, Roger and Joann regularly attended daily rosary and weekly Mass and Communion Service in the Wellington Chapel, where Roger faithfully led the daily rosary for many years.

Roger is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, JoAnn; their four devoted children, Rick (Kate), Peggy Ruhe (Mike), Cathy Bialowas (Todd), and Bob (Laura); as well as11 loving grandchildren; Dan Mayer (Jenna), Tom Mayer (Meghan), David Mayer, Ann Marie Heise (Graham), David Ruhe (fiancée Heather McGuire), Christine Ruhe, Eric Ruhe (Sarah), Alex Bialowas, Maddie Mayer, Casey Mayer, and Ella Mayer; and three cherished great-grandchildren: Anthony and Grace Ruhe, and Luke Mayer. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Known for his quick and quirky sense of humor and infectious smile, Roger moved through the world with the beautiful belief that there are truly no strangers, only friends he hadn’t yet met. As a devout Catholic, he lived his faith and Christian values through active community work; notably, he was commissioned as one of the first Eucharist ministers at St. Luke Church in Lakewood, Ohio, following the historic reforms of Vatican II.

Roger graduated from St. Ignatius High School and Max Hayes Trade school prior to becoming a proud member of IBEW Local Union 38. Roger was a member for 47 years, of which 33 years were dedicated to his role as a business agent. His deep faith seamlessly blended into the relationships he had with the men and women of his electrical union, many of whom he helped in a variety of ways beyond their daily jobs.

Roger was recognized for routinely getting involved in and organizing charitable community initiatives that brought his labor peers and union brothers and sisters together to support those in need.

Above all, he approached life with extreme patience and extended a steady, gentle grace that made everyone feel deeply heard and valued. Roger will be profoundly missed, but his legacy of faith, service, and connection will live on in the countless lives he touched.

“Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

The Mayer family extends its heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated team at The Wellington for their care and compassion as well as to the medical care team at Mercy Health who treated and supported Roger in Cincinnati and especially during his most recent hospitalization.

Visitation will be held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 5222 North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m.
