Mary Caryl Hartmann (nee Groh), born on October 27, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, at the age of 91. A devoted mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, Caryl will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Caryl was married to the late Jerome A. "Jerry" Hartmann and is survived by her loving sons, Richard (Julia) Hartmann, Robert Hartmann, Jerome (Carol) Hartmann, and Donald (Beth) Hartmann. She shared a special bond with her grandchildren - Daniel (Maura), Carrie (Kris Hilou), Jacob, Emily, Paul, and Connor Hartmann-and was a proud great-grandmother to Gavin and Madelyn Rose.

As the beloved daughter of the late Ambrose and Mary Groh, Caryl is also remembered by her brother, Joe (JoAnn) Groh, and by her late siblings Mariyn (Jack) Erhart, Bill (Lois) Groh, Glenn Groh, Dave (Peggy) Groh, and Tom Groh. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Barb Groh and Mary Groh, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will carry on her legacy with love.

Caryl loved reading - even as a young girl she could be found walking home from the Westwood Library and reading a book at the same time. If she didn't have a book in her hand, she enjoyed putting together a puzzle, solving the daily crossword puzzle, or ready to play a game of cards.

As a graduate of Mother of Mercy High School, she shared the Circle of Mercy with her granddaughters who are graduates of Mother of Mercy High School and McAuley High School (now unified as Mercy McAuley High School).

An avid Cincinnati Reds fan, Caryl spent countless hours watching games on television and listening on the radio, her enthusiasm for the team evident to all who knew her.

Caryl had an infectious sense of humor. Family gatherings were filled with laughter and good-natured teasing.

Most importantly, she cherished her family, hosting bi-weekly dinners that are a source of many happy memories for the extended Hartmann family. Jerry and Caryl were involved grandparents who enjoyed attending numerous recitals, concerts, ceremonies, and competitions.

Together, Caryl and Jerry lived an active lifestyle. They enjoyed longwalks and traveling the world together. Never forgetting their family,they always sent post cards to their grandchildren and brought backshells and sand dollars from their adventures.

In gratitude for the care she received, the family extends heart felt thanks to the caregivers at Ohio Living Llanfair, whose compassion and support were invaluable during her final years.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Little Flower Church, 5560 Kirby Ave. with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Special condolences may be expressed atfrederickfh.com
