Sometime before dawn, on Saturday, November 4, 2023, the Lord gently called His child, Marie (aka "Toots ") to enter His Kingdom. At the age of 90, she answered His call and transitioned from her ordinary, peaceful slumber to eternal life, as her faith told her was His promise.

We imagine she was greeted by her parents, Mathias and Marie Hunseder. Next, we believe, she joined those whose presence she still grieved. She dearly missed her husband, Fred (Fritz) Schoenbaechler, who departed this life during their 63rd year of marriage. Her beloved siblings who, with their spouses, preceded her in death: Fred (Lydia) Hunseder, Margaret (Alex) Fischer as well as her brothers and sisters-in-laws: Bob (Margaret) Schoenbaechler and Rose (Tom) Moran, were in the heavenly receiving line to welcome her.

Left behind to grieve her absence are her daughters, LeeAnn Spears and Linda (Dan) Turner, her grandchildren: Andrew Spears, Nate (Amy) Spears, Eric (Rachel) Spears, Martin (Catherine) Spears, Matt Turner and Joseph Turner. She will also be missed by her five great-grandchildren: Nathaniel, Emma, Ellie, Christian and Logan Spears.

She also leaves behind her brothers, Ben (June) Hunseder of Florida, Dr. Joe Hunseder, Steve (Diane) Hunseder, of Ohio and Tom Hunseder of California as well as many nieces and nephews across the United States.

Toots was born in Cincinnati to German immigrants. She was the second of their seven children. She graduated from Xavier Commercial College in 1949, worked in offices providing secretarial and administrative support in exchange for wages. She married in 1954 and began her career as a mother in 1957. She was mostly devoted to serving her family but also brought home a paycheck when necessary. She and Fritz worked together as a team to make ends meet. She cared for not only her own children, but she also provided a home and assistance to her mother and shelter for her unmarried siblings. She acted as their maternal representative when Alzheimer's disease took away her mother's ability to care for a family. Because of this, to some nieces and nephews she seemed more like a grandma than an aunt, and she embraced this role, too.

Toots and Fritz retired to Pine Island Cove in St. James City, Florida where she became a friend to many and participated in a variety of activities. During her 30 year stay in the Cove, she crafted, quilted, tended to many gardens and became quite knowledgeable in the care and fostering of countless butterflies. To many she was known as "The Butterfly Lady". For a while, she also offered her secretarial skills to the homeowner's association to benefit the residents of Pine Island Cove, without compensation. She was widely known for the many areas she kept trimmed and weeded to her high standards, both at the Cove and around her parish's grounds.

In 2022, she decided it was time to downsize and move to Port Charlotte to live with her daughter, LeeAnn. She prepared to do so in good health and spirits. Her home in the Cove was all under contract to be sold but Hurricane Ian prevented the sale. The recovery from the hurricane took its toll on her as she worked tirelessly to help clean up debris, pull weeds and rescue plants abandoned by their owners. Her only complaints of late were that her feet "felt funny," she didn't have as much "pep" as she used to, and that the neighbors needed to cut their grass.

She was still independent behind the wheel and able to maintain her hobbies, health, faith and relationships. All her special touches will be missed. She sent cards for every occasion, graced with her perfect penmanship, decorated with stickers, and of course, a return address label from one of the many charities she supported. Many cards brought the news the recipient would be remembered in masses offered by various groups of religious orders that received her donations.

During her last days, she was still exercising her sewing talents and baking her goodies for her family and a good friend on Pine Island.

Her spirit was well-fortified with the sacraments, her faith, unshakable. Her mind was still sharp, even though she claimed her memory failed her, and her will was still strong. She left this world prepared, having stated, "I'm ready to go, whenever the good Lord wants me," and departed in a way many desire yet few obtain, proving she was truly in God's favor.

We trust she is enjoying her reward and rest. Certainly she has earned itas she left her indelible mark on the hearts of many, whether they knew her for years, months, or just a few hours. Her door was always open and she knew no strangers. Today the world is a better place because she existed in it. Truly, her life was well lived. Well done, good and faithful servant. Go and rest in peace.

She will be buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 11000 Montgomery Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45249 on Thursday, January 18th at 11:30 a.m. with a brief interment ceremony.

The Mass of Resurrection for Toots was celebrated December 5th at her home parish on Pine Island.
