With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joanne Elizabeth Toms, who left us on September 16, 2026, at the age of 79. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Elmer and late Shirley Riestenberg. Joanne was a remarkable woman whose spirit touched all who knew her. She dedicated her life to family, friends, and her passion for the arts, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and inspiration.

Joanne, was a proud graduate of the University of Cincinnati, made waves in her field as a Senior Systems Analyst and was one of only two women in her graduation class to earn a degree in Mathematics. Her dedication and intellect paved the way for many women who followed in her footsteps.

As a mother, she was a guiding light to her children, Stephanie Sommer and Garrett Schwein and was also instrumental in the lives of her stepchildren Jeff (Karyn) Toms and Kristy (Dave) Wilson. Joanne's love extended to her grandchildren Grayson, Aidan, Chloe, Jacob, and David, who will carry her memory in their hearts forever. Joanne will also be deeply missed by her siblings: Nancy (the late Steve) McBreen, Pat Riestenberg, John (Teresa) Riestenberg, and Sue (Mike) Ginn, who shared countless joyful moments and heartfelt memories with her.

A woman of many talents, Joanne enjoyed playing golf, volleyball, and bowling, finding joy in competition and connection with friends. An avid supporter of the arts, her creative spirit shone through in her painting, crocheting, sewing, and various crafts. A long-time season ticket holder for the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team, she embraced her passion for sports with the same enthusiasm as she did in all her endeavors.

The love and laughter that Joanne brought into this world will be missed, but her legacy will live on in the lives she touched. Family and friends will gather to remember her life and celebrate her spirit at her visitation at Frederick Funeral Home on Sunday (September 20) from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Ann Church on Monday (September 21) at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Cincinnati Foundation (scholarship fund). 

In gratitude for the joy she brought into all of our lives, let us carry her memory forward and continue to celebrate the moments, both big and small, that make life beautiful.
