Gottfried Anton Laux was born in Banat Yugoslavia in 1937. His flight for freedom began at the age of 7. News of the advancing Russian military led to their family evacuation and horrendous survival experience for the following years as they traveled to Hungary and then Austria.

When the war ended on May 8, 1945, their family was thankful not to be in the Russian Zone. Shortly, however, escape to the American zone became imminent. They changed their name from Laux and were on the run again. They aspired to immigrate to America.

The plan was reached with the help of cousins who had emigrated to America previously. They arrived in New York, after a 7 day ocean voyage on December 10, 1951. They had support of cousins at arrival and launched out shortly and worked hard to establish a new life.

We are all so proud of the accomplishments of the Laux family and strength they displayed in their family foundation and legacy left behind. We admire Gottfried for his handle of the language, arriving to go to school not speaking English, his service to the U.S. Army and Air Force at the age of 19, his skills, knowledge and work ethic and love of drafting and machine design to this day. His marriage of 54 years, his pride and love for his family and their accomplishments, and watching the grandchildren as they display their special traits are such proud moments for him. He enjoyed the peacefulness of nature on retirement with a project of remodeling a cabin site. It was a hands project for 14 years so far. It has brought such joy and satisfaction to him, a fun kind of work, but his sudden illness with pancreatic cancer has brought him to his final rest on Sunday, October 17, 2021. We will miss him greatly but he will always be with us in mind and spirit.

Ready to join parents Katharina Kowatch and Anton Laux as their flight from wartime Europe to eternal peace has been reached on Sunday, October 17, 2001 at the age of 84. Visitation at Frederick Funeral Home, 2553 Banning Road on Monday (Oct 25) from 6-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial at St. James Church (White Oak) on Tuesday (October 26) at 10am.
